DAY 5: Asking Questions

Objective:

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the structure of basic question forms in English.

  2. Use question words correctly (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How).

  3. Form and ask both Yes/No and Wh- questions.

  4. Practice question formation through speaking and listening activities.

🎲 Lesson Activities – Asking Questions (A1–A2)


🔸 Activity 1: “Question Word Flash Race”


Time: 5 minutes Focus: Vocabulary recognition Type: Whole class / Team-based


Instructions:

  1. Write question words (who, what, where, when, why, how) on the board or flashcards.

  2. Say a sentence or answer aloud.

  3. Students race to the board and point to or hold up the correct question word.


Example: Teacher says: “Because I was late.” → Students choose: Why


🔸 Activity 2: “Yes/No or Wh-?” Sort Game

Time: 8 minutes Focus: Question structure awareness Type: Group or pair work


Instructions:

  1. Prepare sentence strips with mixed questions (both Yes/No and Wh-).

  2. Students read and sort them into two groups.


Examples:

  • “Do you like chocolate?” → Yes/No

  • “Where do you live?” → Wh-

Extension: Ask students to create 2 new questions in each category.


🔸 Activity 3: “Missing Question Word” Fill-In

Time: 7 minutes Focus: Grammar accuracy Type: Worksheet or board activity

Instructions: Give students sentences with a blank where the question word should be.

Examples:

  • “___ is your favorite color?” → What

  • “___ do you live?” → Where

Variation: Use pictures and ask students to formulate the full question.


🔸 Activity 4: “Reorder the Question”

Time: 5 minutes Focus: Sentence structure Type: Individual or pairs

Instructions: Provide jumbled question words. Students rearrange them to form proper questions.

Examples:

  • your / is / name / what → What is your name?

  • go / when / you / do → When do you go?

✅ Ideal for reinforcing grammar in a hands-on way.


🔸 Activity 5: “Ask Me 3” – Partner Speaking

Time: 10 minutes Focus: Real communication Type: Pair speaking activity

Instructions:

  1. Each student gets a card with 3 questions (or writes their own).

  2. They interview their partner and take notes.

  3. Then, each student introduces their partner to the class.

Sample Questions:

  • What do you eat for breakfast?

  • Where do you study?

  • Do you play any sports?


🔸 Activity 6: “Audio Dialogue & Comprehension”

Time: 10 minutes Focus: Listening + Question identification Type: Individual or group

Instructions:

  1. Play a short recorded dialogue or read it aloud. (Use this conversation or custom audio.)

  2. Students answer:

    • How many questions were asked?

    • What question words were used?

    • What were the answers?


🔸 Activity 7: “Question Ladder”

Time: 10 minutes Focus: Fluency & creativity Type: Class chain or circle

Instructions:

  1. Start with a simple question (e.g., “What is your name?”).

  2. The student answers and asks another question to the next student using a different question word.

  3. Continue around the class. Each question must be different.

📝 Bonus Activity: Create Your Question Poster

Time: Homework or Extension Instructions: Students create a small poster with 6 questions they might ask a new friend. They decorate it with images or drawings.

Objective: Activate prior knowledge

🔹 4. Listening Practice (10 mins)


Audio or Teacher-read Dialogue:

A: Hi, what’s your name?

A: Where are you from?

B: I’m from Delhi.

A: Do you work or study?

B: I study at AMU.

A: What do you study?

B: English and History.


Comprehension Questions:

Instructions: Fill in the missing question words.

  1. ___ is your best friend?

  2. ___ do you go to school?

  5. ___ is your school bag?

Answers: Who, Where, Why, When, Where



🔹 6. Sentence Scramble: Reordering (5 mins)

Instructions: Put the words in the correct order to make a question.

  2. you / from / are / where → Where are you from?

  3. work / do / you / where → Where do you work?

  4. go / when / school / to / do / you → When do you go to school?



🔹 7. Speaking Practice (10 mins)


Partner Activity: "Ask Your Partner"

Instructions: Give Give each student a card with 3 questions to ask their partner. Examples:

  • What is your favorite food?

  • Where do you live?

  • Do you like music?

Then ask each student to introduce their partner to the class using the answers.



🔹 8. Wrap-Up & Homework (5 mins)

Review:

  • What are question words?

  • How do we ask about time/place/person?

Homework: Write 5 questions you would ask a new friend. Examples:

  • What is your name?

  • Where do you live?

  • What do you do?
